Resume, Saynave BTS

This was a fun project. The fine people at MalixMedia (Director Alex Reinhard, Producer Max Morgan) and DP Joe Grasso crafted an interesting concept for this music video. Problem solving is the name of the game. This project presented two unique challenges while working as a gaffer. 1) How do we trigger the air cannon? and 2) How do we rig our lights so the stands and lights are not in the shot? I love tinkering and building diy projects. So when I pitched the team the idea of a confetti cannon that the actor can trigger, they were all in. Center For Literacy: BTS

Behind the scenes look at filming a project by yourself, during COVID-19. Working alone presents its own challenges, but if you have the right equipment, your job becomes easier (most of the time). Let's start by addressing the gear used (which was totally overkill) to complete this project. Our camera was the hallowed Alexa Mini, paired with an Atlas Orion 40mm 2X Anamorphic, T2 lens (woo wee). Since we were putting a teleprompter in front of our camera and lens combo (gross, I know), the 40mm was too wide for our teleprompter. The frame was so wide using a 40mm 2X anamorphic lens, that the…

1-800-Pack-Rat Project

Recently, I filmed a small series of spots for Pack Rat, along with the help of my talented friends, Adam Hribar & Tom Carson (info to their work below): Adam: https://www.adamhribar.com/info Tom: https://carson.film/ For most of the interview segments, we used a fairly simple technique of using silk to soften the light, and a bounce card to return ambient light By modifying natural light with a 6x6 frame of Magic Cloth, and filling from the shadow side with an Aputure 300Dii (with an egg crate), we were able to achieve a natural-looking image for this project. An unorthodox approached was used in grabbing the family…

Light Review: Aputure 300X

This is my first time reviewing a light. Let me know what you think. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akRbbutFhJw&feature=emb_logo I definitely do not recommend taking apart your 300X lamp, but if you do, it looks like they use a water-cooled block to keep the LED chips form heading up! This is what the 300X looks like after carefully removing the optical lens disc.

Visit Reading Project

So many filming locations in three days! Here are just a handful: https://vimeo.com/403204824 Motivated from the lamp in the scene, I hung an Astra 6x W/Crate above the lamp. From the background, I also set a Joker 800 HMI lamp to push light through the back window. It was also raining that day, so I also hung an umbrella over the lamp to keep the Joker dry. To highlight the ice skater, I placed a 750Watt Leko on the opposite end of the ice rink. I then operated the lamp by panning it on to our talent. We had an incredible team, with a talented…

Low-Pressure Sodium Vapor Lights

One of the more unique lamps in the lighting game: the low-pressure sodium vapor light You will not find an impressive Color Rendering Index (CRI) or TLCI figure with these style lamps, but that is by design. The low CRI/TLCI rating of 1 is not a flaw, but a feature because these lights are monochromatic. The human eye is the most sensitive to yellow light, which is why these style of lamps still line most high-ways. Low-pressure sodium vapor lamps are commonly used along roadways, since its sodium glow doesn't fatigue driver's eyes.

Camera Repair: Fix Your Own Camera

Why not fix it yourself? Feeling brave? If so, this Do-It-Yourself (DIY) camera repair walkthrough should boost your confidence when it comes to disassembling something expensive. Just over four years have passed since Sony’s initial launch of the Sony FS7 (November, 2014), and if you heavily abuse your camera, chances are it needs a tune up and possibly the viewfinder has suffered. Maybe you enjoy the convenience of having a pre-built camera, ready for use? If this is true, there is a chance items in your camera bag may knock into the viewfinder’s connection point. Should this happen enough, the video feed to the viewfinder will…
